Nigel, director and a senior partner of the firm, is a registered trans-Tasman patent attorney and trade mark attorney. He holds a BSc(Hons) degree majoring in biochemistry and microbiology. Prior to commencing on a PhD program, Nigel undertook research at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (Melbourne Branch) and then at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute investigating effects of anthracycline drugs on gene transcription.

The research for his PhD thesis entitled: “Molecular Studies on the Gene Encoding Ribonucleotide Reductase R1 Subunit” was conducted in the Department of Medical Oncology of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Nigel then undertook post-doctoral research at the University of Melbourne, firstly in the Department of Paediatrics to study and characterise the novel STIM gene family, which he discovered during the course of his PhD studies. The STIM proteins are transmembrane sensors of Ca2+ levels in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. He then moved to the Department of Medicine to prepare and purify IGF-binding proteins, and investigate the relationship of protein structure to binding specificity.

Nigel entered the patent attorney profession in 2001 and undertook a GDipIPLaw at the University of Melbourne, which he completed in 2002.

Nigel’s practice specializes in the drafting, prosecution and litigation of biochemical and biotechnological patents, both before IP Australia and IPONZ. His work focuses on the fields of molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, immunology, diagnostics, medical devices and plant innovations. Having rebuilt his own motor vehicle, Nigel has an excellent knowledge of mechanical inventions. His interest and experience with electronics and building materials adds further to his understanding of inventions in many areas. He also practises in the fields of trade marks and designs before both IP Australia and IPONZ.

Nigel is a Fellow of The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA), a member of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), and the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ).

Away from the office, Nigel’s many interests include spending time with family, fly fishing, cycling, golf and electronic music.
